Use Positive Reinforcement Training Methods With Your Dog

When you have a dog, you need to make sure that your dog behaves well when out in public and around other people. Having a behaved dog at home is a good idea too because you don't want to spend all your time trying to get your dog to do what you want them to. There are a variety of training methods that you can use when you start trying your dog. Of all those methods, one that is based on positive reinforcement is going to be your best bet.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement means that you are giving your dog positive reactions whenever they do what they are supposed to do. Whether that reaction is to give them a treat, a lot of pets and attention, or a favorite toy, it doesn't matter. The point is that your dog did what you told them to do, and you gave them a positive reaction, which just reinforces their behavior. Your dog is going to want to do that behavior again because your reaction made them feel good, and everyone, including dogs, likes to feel good and have their efforts praised.

Devalues Negative Behavior

With positive reinforcement, not only are you giving your dog their reward immediately, but you are also going to ignore any missed commands or negative behavior. Your dog is going to learn that acting that way or not doing what you tell them to do isn't going to get them any reinforcement and very little attention. If you have used a positive reinforcement training method, your dog is going to miss their treat, toy, or pets and love, so they will be less likely to continue that behavior to ignore your commands.

Better Bond

Positive reinforcement training methods are also going to help build a better bond between you and your dog. Part of that is because you have put thought into what is going to be a good reinforcement tool to use with your dog. You have looked to see if they are food-driven, praise-driven, or play-driven. When you find that reward drive, you can use it to key in on the positive aspects of their behavior. Because you are going to give your pet their reward when they do what they are told, you will also have to spend time with them while they figure out that doing good is going to get them treats.

You need to make sure that your dog has all the appropriate training. if you are going to use an obedience school, make sure you agree with all their rules before you send your pet there.
